If you have had this error “could not connect to facebook chat at this time. an unexpected error occurred. please try again.” chances are you are using ie7 ie8 or ie9.
You may have had a go with the firefox and unfortunately facebook does not work well with that browser!
IE7,8,9 are very unreliable,slow and dogged with errors that often trip the operating system into loops and waiting that should overridden.The problem is more with the Microsoft interpretation engine and rule setting requirements.Often this is the case with “as soon as i type a message in facebook chat it says the person is offline”

- never crashes
- errors on page are loaded and shown with an error icon so at least the page is there and can be scrolled
- easier upload and download for images
- Very low system resources, great if you do not have a dual core processor!
Cons
- will no show attacked pages from google registry unless google toolbar installed (recommended)
Even if you use Opera just for Facebook to avoid the “facebook could not connect to facebook chat at this time. an unexpected error occurred. please try a” you will not be disappointed and I guarantee you will never stop using it!
